Much to celebrate Empty Much to celebrate

Post  Soraya Wed Jan 04, 2012 1:44 am

The places were set, the dinner cooked (though the conventional foods admittedly meant Soraya had to focus on everything but the nausea that threatened), and the atmosphere was set as welcoming and festive. It was good to have not only one, but three things to celebrate - Naitachel's return, John Eagle's return, as well as her and Vlad's news.

"Thank you, KC," she said absently as the other redhead set a platter full of food on the table. Mircea had better not complain about the food and how he missed Georgianna's cooking, given the effort they had put in. The spread was, indeed, impressive considering the times, consisting of several foods they were likely to miss eating regularly, such as pizza, popcorn, and even some special drinks that the family had managed to stash away for special occasions.

Soraya stood back and put her hands on her hips, examining the final results. "Well, I suppose that should do," she stated in an approving tone.

Much to celebrate Empty Re: Much to celebrate

Post  Naitachel Fri Jan 06, 2012 2:07 am

Naitachel scratched one of their few horses on the forehead, patting its neck, as a couple goats butted his side for their own share of attention. With a chuckle, he spared them a hand to scratch under chins and around ears.

"I fear I must go," he told the animals. They seemed to be somewhat disappointed, and the cat staying there raised its tail and stalked off in silent protest. The Seraph smiled gently, amused, but shook his head, not falling for that facade of uninterest as his empathy felt otherwise. "I shall return anon, likely in the 'morrow."

The horse gave a nudge with its huge head, and the goats bleated a sort of goodbye, and off Naitachel went, heading down the confusing hallways towards what he thought was the family's quarters again. With luck, this time he'd be right.

Post  Prince Children Fri Jan 20, 2012 5:33 pm

"What's this dinner thing about?" Michael asked his elder brother as he fell into step with him.

With crystal blue eyes typical of the Prince clan, Tommen gave his brother a sidelong look without slowing the pace he held, though his legs were longer than his brother's. His eyebrow promptly raised.

"What?" Michael asked innocently, his own darker-hued blue eyes, reminiscent of his mother, bright with mischief.

"She's trouble. You don't even have to read her mind to know she's completely off-center and bordering on bat-sh*t," Tommen sighed, shaking his head.

Michael laughed aloud at his brother's frank assessment and answered, "Yeah, yeah, I know, but, well, look at her. Besides, she's pleasant company, so long as you don't bring up anything that has to do with cats or tequila. Learned that the hard way." He grinned further, and added, "And hey, who knows, maybe some time with someone who treats her like a queen and gives in to her every desire will help get her back to center, so to speak. Every girl needs love. I'm just trying to do Uncle Min proud by making sure she's treated well."

Tom merely sighed and rolled his eyes. "Just go get changed before showing up to dinner, will you? You're a mess. You'd give mom a heart attack." Indeed, it was hard to miss the fact that Michael had been up to something, given the rumpled and torn state of his clothes and the fact that his hair was in disarray. There seemed to be traces of black here and there, as well, mostly along Michael's back, though Tom didn't investigate those too closely. Whatever wounds he'd had had healed already, which was just as well in Tom's opinion. He didn't want to know any more details on what Michael and Paris had been up to.

It was Michael's turn to take on a sage expression, mimicking his brother's generally stoic attitude. "Yes, yes, of course, one would not want to upset mother," he said, before breaking down and laughing again. "You do you realize you're the pot calling the kettle black, though, right?" he suggested, referring to Tommen's own dusty, greasy disheveled appearance.

<I was working on repairs and investigations,> Tom defended himself. "I was in the lower tunnels. And yes, I was planning on bathing and changing as well." He didn't elaborate further lest the walls nearby had ears. He didn't want to fuel rumors about possible spies within them, nor discuss the role Kahtenny would be taking on now that he had returned. As far as he understood, Badger would remain head of security for the time being, which he thought might also be good for fear of upsetting the status quo the colonists already seemed to value so much. He couldn't blame them - change was scary in such an uncertain world.

The brothers walked alongside each other in silence a few moments, before Michael chimed in again. "So, you never answered my question. What's this dinner about?"

Tom actually smiled and shrugged. "Are you complaining about food? You?" he teased, shaking his head. "Come on. Kahtenny just came back to us, we finally found Naitachel... And, as mom's mentioned, it's nice to have any reason to celebrate these days, not that either of those aren't reason enough on their own." He had the feeling something else was also going on, but he kept his counsel on that.

Michael grinned broadly. "I never complain about food." He then looked at his brother with mischief and challenged, "Race ya!" Without waiting for an answer, he propelled himself at super-human speeds toward home, followed closely by the indignant Tommen. Not that it mattered; to this day, though he was faster, Tommen let his younger brother win, a tradition he'd held since Michael had been a small child.

Much to celebrate Empty Re: Much to celebrate

Post  Kahtenny Fri Jan 27, 2012 7:06 pm

Kahtenny stepped out of the shower, feeling a little better about the setup here than he had earlier in the day. He'd gotten his passcard and had made a fairly thorough tour of the tunnels. Even managed to hide a few crawlers in strategic places. One of the latest developments in espionage before the plague, they were tiny cameras mounted on miniature caterpiller treads, steerable and capable of transmitting sight and sound back to Kahtenny's control paddle or to a monitor he planned to set up in Matty's observation center. They were powered by batteries with a 5-year life, and could almost travel up a straight wall. In case of alarm, he could drive the tiny machine out to a good vantage point, see what was going on, and hide it back in its hole, all from anywhere in the complex. He hadn't been able to drop as many as he'd like, but there were more in the truck. Better get back to it tomorrow.

He dried himself, enjoying the feel of a rough towel across his back, and elected to dress in native garb for dinner. Loose cotton trousers tucked into calf-high laced moccasins, a colorful pullover shirt belted with a dark sash, and a leather headband holding back his raven-black hair. A silver squash blossom chain hung around his neck, and a turquoise stone mounted in the center of his headband completed the effect. <Come,> he told Tsosie, and the wolverine followed him down the tunnel to the dining room. <Stay.> The beast took up his position outside the door, ever watchful.

Radu finished washing up and headed for the dining area. Mircea and Min flanked him quickly.

"Did you find anything of interest with a fresh set of eyes along?" Mircea asked as they headed to the Vlad and Soraya's dinner.

"Nothing we hadn't already noted," Radu answered distractedly, looking over several reports as he walked.

"You're not taking those into the dinner, are you?" Min asked.

Radu held up a finger, indicating he needed one more moment.

Min frowned. "Uncle... Soraya's worked hard planning this. Would you have her feeling as if you couldn't spare her your attention for a single evening."

"Of course not," Radu answered, though he still didn't look up. "Hence the reason I read them now..."

Min and Mircea exchanged a glance as they reached the dining hall. Radu passed the folder to Gavin Chapman, who met them outside the room. "Tell Reese to check out the burrows in cavern two," Radu told the former marine quietly, "but wait to report back. I'll find him after dinner."

"Yes, sir," the tall, dark haired Scotsman replied.

Radu looked from Min and Mircea. "Shall we, then?"

Much to celebrate Empty Re: Much to celebrate

Post  Soraya Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:50 pm

Soraya looked up as someone entered the dining room and smiled brightly as she saw who it was. "Welcome!" she greeted John Eagle. "I trust you had a good tour of the place," she said as she moved one of the chairs usually set in a corner toward the table; there were enough people set to be eating with them this evening that they needed to actually use it this time.

Once that was done, she paused a moment and looked at Kahtenny appraisingly, mischievous smile forming. "You had better not let too many women in the colony see you dressed this way," she teased. "You will have to beat them all off with a stick if they do. You look quite handsome and distinguished."

The redhead was obviously in good spirits, despite how tired and nauseous she felt. She hugged the Apache, then thrust a tray full of various hors d'oeuvres at him. "Eat. Enjoy," she said, though her head remained turned away from the food rather than toward it. If one didn't know any better, one might say she was trying to pass the food off so that it was further away from herself. "I highly recommend the ones with the bits of orange there. KC says they are delicious."

It was then that Radu, Min, and Mircea all entered the dining room, and again, Soraya beamed at them. "It seems things are finally about to start," she said as people slowly started to trickle in. "I hope you are all hungry." Of course they didn't eat actual food for sustenance. "And Mircea, please, we all already know you miss Georgianna's cooking," she preempted. "You will have to make do with these poor substitutes made by KC and I instead." Still, as she spoke, it was clear she was being facetious.

Much to celebrate Empty Re: Much to celebrate

Post  Naitachel Sun Jan 29, 2012 11:08 pm

Luckily, this time Naitachel managed to find his way back to the family's quarters of the colony. As he got closer, the turns felt a bit more familiar, at least. Still, the stone foor rasped against his tailfeathers and wingtips as he walked, the sound lost to that of his robes on the ground yet a sensation that continually reminded the Seraph that he was below ground. While he wasn't claustrophobic, occassionally he still looked at the carved walls around him and felt a strong longing for open sky, open air, the breeze in his feathers and hair, the chance to look at the horizon and into the distance... simply room to move. Radu's gift of that open sanctuary he could fly within was a wonderful thing and let him build his wing strength back, easing his feeling of constraint in this underground sanctuary, but all the beauty in the underground world wasn't the same as the open sky, with stars and clouds for company. For now he would manage, though.

Reaching the dining room, Nait paused a moment, noticing most were already within, and took a breath--then let it out with a soft sigh, Purifying himself clean after dealing with the animals below. Reaching out, he opened the door and glided in with a cheerful smile.

"Oh, this looks and smells wonderful!" he called as he entered, moving to take his usual stool.

Tommen couldn't help but laugh as Brianna appeared in his room, dressed in what he supposed was her best, "teatime," attire. "Love the tutu, Kiddo," he commented as he finished buttoning up his own clean shirt.

"Thanks!" she answered, ever the chipper Prince child, though her features promptly became serious. "Do you think the hat's too much?"

Tom appraised Brianna's electric blue floppy hat, adorned with large orange feathers that decidedly clashed with the pinks and purples in her tutu, not to mention with the bright kelly green of her shirt and yellow tights rounded out by sparkly silver shoes.

"It's perfect," he answered, picking her up and kissing her atop the head.

"What is?" Michael asked, rounding the corner just as Tom exited his room. "Oh," he stopped a moment, eyebrow arched, before grinning. "Nice duds, Kiddo."

Brianna wrinkled her nose at her middle brother. "Duds? You're weird, Mikey." Still, was grinning from ear-to-ear as her brothers carried her to the dining room.

The moment Tommen set Brianna down, Michael announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, her highness has arrived." Brianna giggled, then curtseyed for effect.

"You're right, Uncle Nait. Smells delicious," Michael answered Naitachel, grabbing one of the hors d'oeuvres from the plate offered Kahtenny.

Once again, Tommen merely sighed and rolled his eyes at his brother, then joined the others who seemed to be finding their desired places at the table.

Matty was dragged in, laptop in tow, by Jina. "Found him!" she announced as she guided him to a chair. "It seems baby brother was thinking of skipping this little shin-dig. Don't think so." She stuck her tongue out at him.

"I was monitoring the situation, like I was told to," Matty protested. "It's easier to keep track of things from there." Glancing up at Soraya, he added the perfunctory, "No offense."

"Lisa'll be here in a minute. She's putting the door back on the computer lab." Jina grinned. "Duarte's in there. She's keeping an eye on it until Matty returns.... MUCH LATER."

"Hmph," he replied with a lopsided grin, "Might not look for a stick." He took the plate of hors d'oeuvres, making a show of examining them carefully before taking one of the recommended orange ones. "Mmm, good!"

His grin widened as Matty was dragged in, although he understood the lad's concern. It was a serious responsibility for the young man, and he was right to take it seriously. It should ease his mind considerably when he learned about the crawler cameras Kahtenny had deposited around the halls and was able to monitor them as well. After the tour that morning, the former SEAL had returned to his warwagon and brought out the rest of his clothing and personal gear, as well as a number of electronic "toys" to improve security, outside the doors as well as in the tunnels. It would be well, he thought, to keep the rest of the family, except for Radu, of course, in the dark for the time being. Not that he suspected any of them of the sabotage - he had his notions about that already - but what they didn't know, they couldn't let slip before the servants. He seated Jina, his fingers lightly stroking the nape of her neck as they passed.

"It's about time my beautiful Indian returned," Jina murmured, her fingertips brushing his. She knew that he thought her teasing, and she let him think that, but the truth was she meant it. His ruggedness and sharpness of feature appealed to her. Everything about him was uniquely suited to his place among them, and she'd missed having him there. "It gives us something to celebrate."

Vlad came in as she finished her statement and smiled. "One thing among many, actually," he told her, glancing toward his wife. "Isn't that right, beloved?"

Post  Soraya Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:41 pm

All the redhead could do at the appearance of her children, particularly her daughter, was laugh. She greeted them each in turn before returning to her serving duties. She did pause long enough to nod in Lisa's direction as she entered and noted as her sister-in-law smiled in John Eagle and Jina's direction.

Soraya smiled secretly as well at the byplay between the two. They had always been good at flirting, those two, and though Lisa also often got her hand in as well, it seemed she held back. Perhaps because she wanted to leave her sister room to actually act if Jina so chose without any hurt feelings or resentment. Either way, it was a strange return to pre-apocalyptic normalcy that warmed Soraya's heart.

"Yes, indeed, Kahtenny's return to us is the perfect reason to celebrate," she agreed aloud with the vampiress and Vlad as he entered. Soraya smiled in response to Vlad's announcement, and, after setting down the platter she held, moved to his side. She supposed he was right - this would be as good a time as any to broach the subject of the new addition to the Prince clan. But first, they couldn't overlook another important reappearance.

"Yes, indeed," she agreed. "We have more things than one to celebrate tonight. Naitachel's return, for one," she then said, lifting her glass of soda. "To the return of our too-long-missing family members," she offered as a toast, "John Eagle and Naitachel."

Naitachel blushed warmly, dipping his head modestly over his soda and a few small hors d'oeuvres on his plate, though he lifted his Ginger-Ale to the toast. "It is very good to be home, as I am sure John might attest. I very much missed you all when I was trapped. And to know all of you were in such danger when the fires came down... I thought my heart would break. Not knowing and being helpless to do anything was the worst. I am so very glad we are all together again, even under the ground."

The Seraph beamed happily at the gathered family, content with his world for the moment. His mate was near, the in-laws were happy, the young ones were safe, they still had friends in one piece despite the end of the world as they knew it. What more could one ask?

Well, he did wish he could contact the younger Seraphs, find out how they fared and what they were up to. But how could they use cell phones with no satellites? He could only hope they would check around here with the family sometime. He could sense Kara, the Leviathan, not far from here... not a surprise after Armageddon, but a bit worrying as she was a powerful force by herself.

I thought my heart would break. Not knowing and being helpless to do anything was the worst. I am so very glad we are all together again, even under the ground."

Soraya smiled at Naitachel. "As am I," the redhead agreed after taking a sip of her cranberry juice. It wasn't her favorite, but it resembled wine closely enough that she had hoped to use it to deflect suspicion, at least until the news came out. "Though admittedly we were more worried about you being out there alone without anyone to help protect you when all hell broke loose," she said, before grinning. "No pun intended."

Kahtenny wrote:"I'll second that. I just wish I'd known that it was you running this colony. I'd have been here a lot sooner." He took a sip of wine. "Hey, this is prime stuff. Have you been mining the cellers in Malibu?"

"Most of it comes from our reserved stores," Soraya laughed. "Some of us," she continued, looking pointedly at first Mircea, then Min, "felt strongly about maintaining what could be the, 'last real reserves of the nectar of the gods.' We ended up saving quite a bit of the stuff, along with other varieties of spirits, though of course we keep it for special occasions. I thought this qualified."

The firestarter then paused, glancing at Vlad by her side as though for confirmation that she should continue, before then prompting, "There is, actually, a third reason to celebrate tonight."

She paused again, and took a deep breath. She didn't know why she was so nervous at sharing this news. She knew, logically, that the family would be happy for them, though part of her feared that perhaps they would question the wisdom of adding another child to the family in times like these. That was likely, however, merely a reflection of her own fears regarding her ability to keep a new infant safe in this world.

Soraya swallowed her anxiety as best she could, looked at Vlad once more, and then announced, "We are expecting."

Naitachel chuckled quietly, if a bit wryly, and shrugged his wings, spreading hands helplessly. "I was the least to worry over with such a conflagration. Fire is not my nemesis so much. Honestly, it was not so terrible for me, being in and out during much of that horrible time. Unconsciousness was, in a sense, a kindly thing."

At Soraya's announcement, the Seraph lit up brightly. "Truly? Another one? How wonderful! Congratulations! This is a bright joy indeed to return home to, a light amid these darkened times!"

Matty's expression went from one of shock, to one of hurt, and finally to one of anger before he got up and moved swiftly out the door. How could they think of doing that now? Now, when the odds of dying in infancy or youth was so high? Didn't they understand yet what they'd be condemning it to? Weren't he and Bri enough of a cautionary tale for them? Didn't they get it? Or did they just not care?

Radu rose go after him, but Min help up a hand. "Please, Uncle. Let me get him." He kissed Soraya on the cheek on his way to the door. "Congratulations, Sis. Vlad. Can't wait to spoil another one."

Radu looked uncertain. Matty was his responsibility. But his beloved was home. Finally. And his family was growing. Their friend had returned. There was happiness here to be had, at last. How long had it been?

<Min will help him to see that, brother,> Mircea assured him as he lifted his glass. "To Vlad and Soraya... and their newest addition, as well," he toasted.

"Huh?" Brianna asked, trying to puzzle out exactly what was being said. It took Naitachel's words to clarify exactly what Soraya meant. "I'm going to be a big sister?" she blinked as a slow smile spread across her features. "Oh, I hope it's a girl!"

She nearly bowled both of her parents over in her excitement, while both Tommen and Michael hugged each parent more gingerly, offering their congratulations. Much to her relief, neither showed any sign of reserve, as Soraya had feared they might.

"That explains how grumpy you've been," Michael teased.

Tom shook his head and looked at his brother in amused warning. "Be careful. Pointing it out is just as likely to get you into hot water. Just nod and smile."

Matty's reaction made Soraya's stomach turn, her resolve wavering momentarily, though thankfully Mircea's reaction warmed her, and she managed to retain her composure.

"Thank you," she smiled to both him and Min as he exited, then raised her glass in response to Kahtenny. She barely had time to brace herself for Brianna's tackle hug.

Despite Matty's disapproval, the warmth she felt from her kin helped calm her fears, at least for the moment. "We will love this baby whether it is a girl or a boy," she informed her daughter, pointedly ignoring Michael's jab. Then, dropping her voice to a whisper, she added conspiratorially, "but it would be amusing to dress a little girl." She winked at Bri and straightened, about to suggest the others get to eating before the food became cold. The words, however, were never spoken, interrupted.

The room was plunged into darkness.

Radu immediately went to the door, the darkness little deterrent to one of his ilk, calling back, <Tommen, Vlad, arm check the west wing. Mircea, Lisa, go to the south; Michael, Jina, you're North; Kaht, remain here with Nait, Soraya and Bri. Protect each other.>

In light of recent goings on he didn't dare assume that this was something innocent. Weapons and food were missing.

<Min, meet me in the east wing. Matty, initiate the backup power for the security system and monitor the goings on from your screens. Let us know what you see,> he ordered as he rounded the corner to the east wing storage lockers. <And radio Chapman to send his teams to guard the infirmary and school areas. They must be protected.>

Tommen took only a few moments to glance at his father before heading out toward the west wing as directed. The frequency with which these things were occurring seemed to be increasing, and that troubled him. <More raids on our storage?> Tom asked his father as he began the sweep of the area. And something else troubled him. <Why didn't the backup generators kick in automatically? I thought they were normally set to do so.>

------

Michael followed Jina out, taking only slightly longer than his brother to exit. "This had better not be just some teenaged kids pulling a prank," he grumbled, though he knew better. As he moved North, he could feel the panic of the colonists around them, and, in fact, nearly bowled one over who was frantically running through the hall using a flashlight.

"Hey, calm down," he told the hysterical young man who had a young child en tow. It took several moments for the man to even calm enough to realize the hands that held him still were friendly and not an attacker's. "It's just a blackout, we're going to fix it soon," the vampire promised.

"They're attacking!" the man cried out.

"No, they're not," Michael said, glancing at Jina worriedly. He was likely not the only one having this reaction, and if any of the others were starting to yell and scream and behave this way, then it was likely widespread panic would ensue. "Look, it's just a power outage. There's no one attacking." He hoped silently he wasn't lying.

"But what if they are?" the man persisted, still obviously distressed. "I need to get the two of us out of here. Go down to the..."

"STOP," Michael ordered, particularly now that he had noticed other faces peering out of various rooms in this hallway at the sound of voices. The man was obviously brought up short by the sudden force with which Michael addressed him and stopped speaking.

The young Prince sighed and glanced at Jina again. "Look," he said, more calmly this time. "It's just a power outage. THe worst thing you can do right now is panic. The best thing you can do is stay in your rooms and wait it out. I know it's frightening, but having everyone running around and creating chaos will only make it all worse. Please..." Michael asked.

The man, obviously not convinced, glanced back at Jina as well, looking for confirmation that this was what he should do.

As the other vampires exited, Brianna took Soraya's hand. "Here, this way," she said, tugging gently on her mother to lead her to a seat, then repeated the same thing with Naitachel and his stool.

She was gone again, quickly, then returned and placed a flashlight in Kahtenny's hand. "Here. So you can see," she said, guiding his hand to it.

Before the light flickered on, another beam from a flashlight entered the family's living quarters. More colonists, obviously as agitated as the man Michael was currently dealing with was.

"We have to get out of here!" the woman called. "They have to have some secret way out through these quarters!" she stated, obviously unaware that there were members of the family here yet.

"We should gather some food, first, so we're not starving when we get topside," a second voice, an older man's said.

"Won't the enemies just be worse topside?" a third voice, that of a second girl asked.

Badger Graves leaned over the backup generators, frowning. He reached in, tinkering with it a bit, using his flashlight as steadily as he could to peer into it.

He cursed loudly and dropped something on the ground, presumably a tool, the sound echoing loudly along the stone walls.

It took him several moments to retrieve his flashlight, locate the tool in question, and pick it up, before he set to work again.

Much to celebrate Empty Re: Much to celebrate

Naitachel had taken the stool as directed. His own night-sight required at least a minimum of light to work, so the pitch blackness of the caverns and cut passageways hindered him as well as any human. Still, between his telepathy and empathy he could sense where people were around him, and his memory supplied a basic idea of where furniture lay, using the others as markers for orienting himself.

The growing panic of the colonists was alarming. The Seraph flattened his wings to his spine uneasily, tail curling close protectively, uneasy and concerned. He wasn't sure now was a good time to try singing to calm them. He didn't want to distract their own from their tasks or make them lower their guard when Radu seemed to think there might be danger.

He heard Brianna give Kahtenny a flashlight and smiled--only to start as a flashlight entered with people behind it. That little was enough for him to see very well! Standing, he called to the clearly-fearful colonists, "There is no need to panic so. People are already working towards a solution and there are no enemies about to flee. Why do you not join us for a time, have a seat and something to drink while we await the return of the lights? There is nothing to fear here, I assure you."

The flashlight landed on the group huddled in the back of the main room, blinding them and cloaking the colonists holding it in shadow. It pointed most specifically at Naitachel.

"And you expect us to trust you?" the man's voice asked. "All of this shit started when you showed up." The beam swept over the rest of those remaining behind quickly before returning to the seraph. "I don't want to have to hurt any of you. Now, if you just let us get some supplies, we'll be out of your hair without any trouble."

Soraya stood, moved between the seraph and the colonists with alarm. "What are you saying?" she asked, palms forward in what she hoped was a calming gesture. "That somehow Naitachel is any less in this mess than we all are? We know him, he is a friend. Please... The lights will be on soon, there is no need to panic."

<Please, stay calm all of you,> Soraya sent the others, particularly her daughter whom she sensed was becoming more agitated. <We do not want to make things worse.>

Aloud, she further pled, "You cannot go out there. It is suicide. Are you willing to sentence your daughter to that fate?"

The man seemed to waver - for all he mistrusted Naitachel, Soraya and the rest of the family had always done right by them.

"I don't trust him," the man spat back, as if that excused his behavior.

As if on cue, the lights suddenly returned, blinding the entire group momentarily.

The generators must have kicked back on.
